Phones are good at scanning a QR on a box in front of you. They are awkward at scanning a QR that already lives in Photos, Slack, or a PDF screenshot. The control is buried, and glare from a second screen makes live-camera scan fail.
You do not need another “QR scanner app” with ads. Save the image, decode it, read the URL, then open it.

iPhone: screenshot or photo already on the device
- Open Control Centre and tap the QR scanner (add it via Settings → Control Centre if missing).
- Choose the photo from the picker if offered; or open Photos, zoom the code, then use the camera scanner pointed at the screen — worse, but works.
- On recent iOS, the Camera app can scan; for images, Google Lens in Chrome or the Control Centre scanner is more reliable.

Android
- Google Lens (Camera → Lens, or long-press the Home/search): pick the image
- Photos → Lens on the still
- Some OEMs hide “scan QR” under a Smart Panel — Lens is the consistent path
Computer
- Windows: Win+Shift+S screenshot into Snipping Tool; then Lens in Chrome or the reader above
- Mac: screenshot, then the reader, or Preview is not enough by itself
PDF: zoom until the code is sharp, screenshot the region, decode the PNG. Do not photograph the monitor.
“It will not scan”
- Code too small in the frame — crop tighter
- JPEG artefacts from a WhatsApp forward — ask for the original
- Screen moiré — screenshot, do not re-photograph
- Not a QR (it’s a 1D barcode) — phone cameras vary; a dedicated scanner or a barcode-capable app is needed
Safety
A QR is a URL you have not typed. Invoice PDFs and “warehouse collection” posters are a known phishing path. Decode first; if the host is not the company you expect, stop. The reader on this page shows the host before you open the link.
